Julian and I were walking through the mall earlier today when we spotted an enormous heart shaped box of chocolates in the window of a gourmet chocolate shop. The price tag: $165. Julian scoffed. “Geez. What’s with Valentine’s Day this year?”
I explained that it was like this every year but he didn’t believe me. So I took a different direction and asked what he was going to do when he got older and had to buy Valentine’s gifts for a girlfriend. He scoffed again, and dismissed the question until I pushed it by telling him that it was inevitable, and one of the burdens of being incredibly, ridiculously good-looking: He was going to have lots of girls wanting to be his girlfriend.
I went on to tell him that I knew of girls, even in the 2nd grade, that have told me that they liked Julian, or that he was handsome, and I asked him to imagine how much worse it was going to get when he was taller and even more handsome, and could DRIVE!
He said, “Mama. I’m going to pretend like you never said that. Actually, we’re just gonna pretend that this conversation neeeever happened.”
Deal, kid. It was making me anxious, anyway.
